Gimmicks for promoting film are marketing tools utilized by film makers to ensure that their films find a visibility with as many prospective audiences as possible. There are very many ways, a filmmaker uses these gimmicks to promote a film. The most common gimmick used since cinema started is the alleged romance or rumored affair between the lead actor and the lead actress. However, today, as the audience is very discerning, this gimmick is dying a slow death.

Some of the marketing gimmicks of recent times that made an impact are:
1. Before the release of Ghajini, all the counter-boys at the cafeteria in the multiplexes across India spotted the Ghajini hair style. It made audiences well aware of the film Ghajini and when the film released, audiences could identify with lead actor's character.

2. During the release of Dawat-E-Ishq the lead pair Aditya Roy Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra distributed Hyderabadi Biryani to audiences when they visited select multiplexes across India two weeks prior to the release of the film.

3. Many films use fight between the lead pair, two heroes or two heroines as a promotional gimmick for their film. Example Lunchbox, the promotions pitted Irfaan Khan against Nawazuddin Sidiqui
